今回は、パラフレージング（paraphrasing）という通訳訓練法をご紹介します。
パラフレージング（paraphrasing）とは
通訳訓練法としてのパラフレージングとは、原文を聞いた後、その意味を変えずに別の単語や表現を使って「言い換える」ことです。その際、情報量も変えません。これは、原文の要点だけを表現するサマライジングのような練習と異なる点です。
パラフレージングの言い換えは、原文と同じ言語で行います。この訓練法には訳すという作業は含まれていません。
日英及び英日通訳の訓練法としては、パラフレージングは英語だけでなく日本語でも行います。
パラフレージングの一例を見ましょう。次のような原文があるとします。
コロナ禍での授業では、すべてがオンラインの場合や、学生数が一定以上の授業のみオンラインという場合、さらに、対面とオンラインを同時進行させるハイブリッドの場合など、いくつかのパターンが考えられます。
これを、意味を変えずに別の単語やフレーズを使って言い換えると、例えば次のように言うことができます。
コロナ禍での授業形態は、全授業をオンラインにしたり、一定数以上の受講者がいる授業だけはオンラインにしたり、対面授業をオンラインでもリアルタイム受講できるハイブリッド方式を使うなど、いくつか可能です。
原文の意味や情報量は変わっていません。同じ内容を別の言い方で表現しているだけです。原文の内容を削ることなく表現しています。
目的・効果
この訓練の目的は、言語運用力と多様な表現力の養成をすることです。
通訳をしているときは、文章を推敲する余裕はありません。同時通訳では当然のことですが、逐次通訳においても、通訳は話し始めたら、そのまま、そのセンテンス（文）を続けて完結することがベストです。どの言葉で話し始めても、言い直さずにセンテンスを続けられる言語運用力・表現力が求められるのです。それを養成する訓練の１つがパラフレージングです。この訓練を積んでおけば、通訳をしているときに、さまざま訳出方法や表現形式の可能性が浮かんでくるようになります。
ただ、実際に通訳をした経験が無い方にとっては、この「どの言葉で話し始めても、言い直さずにセンテンスを続けられる言語運用力・表現力」が具体的にどういうことなのかは、分かりにくいと思いますので、パラフレージングの訓練に入る前に、通訳作業の一例を見てみましょう。次の英語原文を日本語に通訳しているとします。
Oxfam has estimated that the average carbon footprint of someone in the world’s richest 1% could be 175 times that of someone in the poorest 10%. Studies also show that the poor suffer the most from climate change. (CNN 2019年7月12)
1つ目のセンテンスを、「オックスファムが推定・・・」
と訳し始めたとします。これをどのように訳し続けて完結するかですが、パラフレージングで表現力を鍛えておくと、様々な続け方が思い浮かんでくるでしょう。訳例をいくつか挙げてみます。
オックスファムが推定したところ、世界で最も裕福な1％の人々の一人当たりの平均的な二酸化炭素排出量は、最も貧しい10％の人々の175倍にもなります。
オックスファムが推定した数値によれば、世界人口の1％の富裕層の平均的な一人当たりの二酸化炭素排出量は、10％の最貧層の175倍です。
オックスファムが推定した結果、一人当たり平均では、世界のわずか1％の最富裕層が、10％の最貧層の175倍もの二酸化炭素を排出しているとのことです。
オックスファムが推定した一人当たりの平均的な二酸化炭素排出量は、世界人口1％の最富裕層では、10％の最貧困層の175倍になります。
次に２つ目のセンテンスを「また、複数の研究・・・」
と訳し始めたとします。どのようにこれを続けて訳していきますか。訳例をいくつか書きます。
また、複数の研究によりますと、貧困層が気候変動によって最も被害を受けるとのことです。
また、複数の研究では、気候変動によって最も被害を受けるのは貧困層だと明らかになっています。
また、複数の研究は、気候変動により最も被害を受けるのは貧困層だとしています。
また、複数の研究が示していますが、最貧困層が気候変動の最大の被害者なのです。
このように、言い始めたセンテンスを、なるべく自然な日本語で続けつつ原文の意味内容を表現する力が、通訳者には求められるのです。こういった、言語運用力・表現力を養う1つの方法がパラフレージングです。
練習方法
基本手順
パラフレージング訓練のポイントは、原文の上辺の言葉に振り回されず、言葉が伝えている意味内容を把握して、それを別の言葉に言い換えることです。具体的には、センテンスの意味内容をいろいろな言い方で表現する練習をします。
とは言っても、具体的にどうすれば良いのか取っ掛かりが分からないということもあるかと思います。そのような場合は、次のようなやり方を試してみましょう。
- 文頭を何らかの別の言葉に置き換えてみて、その後なんとか続けてそのセンテンス全体を言い換える
- 動詞を変える
- 語順を変える
- 文の構造を変える
- 複数の短いセンテンスに切り分ける
それでは練習の具体例です。英語でパラフレージング訓練をする場合の例です。音声ではなく文字情報を使って、練習の一例を見ていきます。後ほど、音声を使って訓練をしましょう。
教材は、2015年12月12日に採択された地球温暖化対策のための「パリ協定」について、採択の数時間後にオバマ大統領がホワイトハウスで行ったスピーチを使います(出典：American Rhetric)。まずは、あいさつと冒頭文です。
Good evening. In my first Inaugural Address, I committed this country to the tireless task of combating climate change and protecting this planet for future generations.
「Good evening」は、そのままで良いとして、その次の出だしの部分をパラフレーズしてみましょう。例えば、「When I」で始めてみます。
When I gave my first Inaugural Address, I committed this country to the tireless task of combating climate change and protecting this planet for future generations.
別の始め方を試します。
I used my first Inaugural Address to commit this country to the tireless task of combating climate change and protecting this planet for future generations.
次は、文頭を元の形に戻して、「commit this country to」の部分を変えてみましょう。一つ気が付くのは、仮に「the tireless task of combating ～」の「task」を省いても、そのニュアンスを含めることが出来るのではないかということです。
In my first Inaugural Address, I stated that we as a country were committing ourselves to tirelessly combating climate change and protecting this planet for future generations.
今度は、原文の「committed」という表現を変えることに注目しながら、パラフレーズしてみます。
In my first Inaugural Address, I made a commitment that we as a country would work tirelessly to combat climate change and to protect this planet for future generations.
このセンテンスはこれくらいで、良いでしょう。次の文に進みます。
Two weeks ago, in Paris, I said before the world that we needed a strong global agreement to accomplish this goal — an enduring agreement that reduces global carbon pollution and sets the world on a course to a low-carbon future.
最初の部分を変えてみましょう。「Two」は「A couple of」に変えて、「in Paris, I said before the world」も少し変えます。
A couple of weeks ago, I told the world leaders gathered in Paris that we needed a strong global agreement to accomplish this goal — an enduring agreement that reduces global carbon pollution and sets the world on a course to a low-carbon future.
次に、一つ目の「that」が導く節だけに焦点を当ててパラフレーズしましょう。まず、「we needed a …」という最初の部分を言い換えてみます。
… that a strong global agreement was necessary to accomplish this goal — an enduring agreement that reduces global carbon pollution and sets the world on a course to a low-carbon future.
今度は、「to accomplish this goal」というフレーズで始めてみます。
… that, to accomplish this goal, we needed a strong global agreement — an enduring agreement that reduces global carbon pollution and sets the world on a course to a low-carbon future.
次は、文構造を変えてみます。例えば、「accomplishing this goal」で始めましょう。

今度は、「a strong global agreement」以下を言い換えてみましょう。

次のセンテンスに進みます。

どうしましょう。例えば、このような言い換えはいかがでしょうか。
We cooperated to come up with the strong agreement the world needed.
We worked together and came up with the strong agreement the world needed.
By working together, we came up with the strong agreement the world needed.
ちなみに、「agreement 」のような単語と共に用いる動詞を別の動詞に言い換えようとしても他に思いつかないというような場合は、活用辞典（連語辞典）を使って調べるということも出来ます。手元にある辞書で調べますと、例えば次のような動詞が可能だろうと分かります — 「bring about, draw up, negotiate, secure, work out」。
By working together, we brought about {secured} {worked out} the strong agreement the world needed.
今度は、少し言い方に変化を持たせます。
We successfully negotiated the strong agreement the world needed.
次に進みましょう。
We met the moment.
これも短いですね。例えば、これはいかがでしょうか。
We rose to the occasion.
次の段落は、称賛や感謝の言葉を述べる部分です。

動詞を変えてみます。

いかがでしょうか。このスピーチは全部で7分20秒ありますが、上でスクリプトを使ってパラフレージング練習をしたのは、その最初の1分10秒の部分です。
それでは、今度は、音声を使ってのパラフレージングです。
音声を使ってパラフレージング訓練
つぎのようにパラフレージング訓練をしましょう。
- 「Good morning」の次の一つ目のセンテンス（「for future generations」まで）を聞いてこのセンテンスが終わったら音源を止めます。
- このセンテンスを、意味や情報量を変えずに別の言葉で言い換えましょう。先程のように、いろいろな表現に言い換えてみましょう。
- 同じセンテンスを別の言い方でパラフレージングするときに、再びそのセンテンスを聞いてからやっても良いでしょう。
- 何通りかの言い換えをして、これ以上は言い換え方が思いつかないという段階になったら、次のセンテンスに進み、同じ要領で、パラフレージング訓練をします。
長いセンテンスですと、音声を聞いて原文を全て正確に覚えるのは難しいです。でも、かまわないのです。パラフレージング訓練では原文の言葉をそのまま再現するのではなく、言葉の伝えている意味を再現することを目指します。

教材は、何でも構いません。「通訳訓練法（２）シャドーイング&音読」及び「通訳訓練法（３）リプロダクション」でお勧めしている教材を使ってもいいですね。それに加えて、パラフレージング訓練の教材として特におすすめなのは、上で使ったAmerican Rhetoricです。オバマ大統領のスピーチ以外にもたくさんのスピーチがあります。また、イギリス英語の教材が良ければ、European Commission の Speech Repository などを利用してもいいでしょう。
