「英語のニュースを読むコツ」シリーズにようこそ。
英語のニュース記事では、よく使われる表現があり、頻出表現の使われ方や意味や役割を分かっておくと、ニュース記事が読みやすくなります。今回注目する表現は「(source) familiar with (the matter)」や「(source) close to (the matter)」です。括弧を付けたのは、その部分には別の単語が使われることもあるからです。
使われ方・意味
この「source familiar with the matter / source close to the matter」という表現は「事情に詳しい情報筋」や「この件に詳しい情報筋」というような意味です。
「source」の部分は情報筋が複数の場合は「sources」となります。
また、「source」の代わりに「person(s)」、「people」、「individuals」などといった名詞が使われることも頻繁です。そういった場合は、日本語では「〜に詳しい関係者」や「〜に詳しい人物」などと訳すことができます。
「matter」の部分にも、様々な表現が使われます。例を上げると「discussions」、「talks」、「negotiations」、「case」、「situation」などをよく見かけます。
また、特に「source close to the matter」のパターンでは、当該記事で報道されている出来事に関わっている人や会社や組織の名前などが「matter」の部分に使われていることがあります。その際、日本語では「〜に近い人物」や「〜に近い関係者」などと訳されることが多いと思います。
