英語のニュースを読むコツ（９）頻出構造：「S V, Ving」及び「Ving, S V」

「英語のニュースを読むコツ」シリーズにようこそ。

英語のニュース記事では、よく使われる文構造（パターン）があります。そういった構造の意味や役割や機能を分かっておくと、ニュース記事が読みやすくなります。今回注目するのは、「S V, Ving」（「主語+動詞」+「動詞ing」）及び「Ving, S V」（「動詞ing」+「主語+動詞」）という構造です。

主節「S V」と現在分詞「Ving」が使われている構造は、学校で「分詞構文」と呼んでいる部類に属するものですね（分詞構文には現在分詞の代わりに過去分詞を含む構造もあります）。

「S V, Ving」（「主語+動詞」+「動詞ing」）

まず「S V, Ving」という構造が含まれる文を1つ見ましょう。「Vingが導く句」の部分に下線を入れます。原文の下に和訳を添えます。

Harvey burst the tall banks of Buffalo Bayou Park, flooding the city’s theater district and City Hall. (The New York Times, November 11, 2017)

和訳 -- 大型ハリケーン「ハービー」によって、バッファロー・バイユー・パークの高い堤防が決壊し、市内の劇場街や市庁舎が水浸しになった。

原文の「Harvey」は「Hurricane Harvey」のことです。引用文は『ニューヨークタイムズ』紙の記事の後半にあり、記事の冒頭では「Hurricane Harvey」に言及があます。また、「Bayou」という単語の意味は「緩流河川」つまりゆったり流れる川です。

お分かりのように、この文の「S」（主語）は「Harvey」、「V」（動詞）は「burst」で、コンマ（カンマ）の後に「Ving」（動詞ing）である「flooding」があります。原文では、「burst」も「flooding」も他動詞として使われていますが、和訳ではぎこちない日本語を避けるために自動詞的に書いています。直訳すれば、「ハービーが、バッファロー・バイユー・パークの高い堤防を決壊させ、市内の劇場街や市庁舎を水浸しにした」のようになります。

「Ving」の主語は、主節の主語と同じ

「S V, Ving」という構造に関して、特に覚えておきたいことは、「Ving」の（意味上の）主語は、文の主節の主語と同じだということです。上の文の主節（Harvey burst the tall banks of Buffalo Bayou Park）の主語は「Harvey」ですから、「flooding」の主語も「Harvey」です。つまり、市内の劇場街や市庁舎を水浸しにしたのは、ハリケーン「ハービー」ですね。

「S V, Ving」の意味・ニュアンス

主語が同じならば、「and」をつかって、すなおに「S V and V」としても良いのではないかと思われる人もいるかもしれません。試しに、一度、そのように書き換えてみましょう。

Harvey burst the tall banks of Buffalo Bayou Park and flooded the city’s theater district and City Hall.

文法的な問題はありませんね。直訳をしても、先程の直訳と同じになります。「ハービーがバッファロー・バイユー・パークの高い堤防を決壊させ、市内の劇場街や市庁舎を水浸しにした。」

それでは、わざわざ「flooding」とする意味があるのかな？と思う人もいるかもしれません。

この疑問に答えるために、実際に起きた出来事を考えてみます。まず、ハリケーン「ハービー」のもたらせた大雨がバッファロー・バイユー・パークの高い堤防を決壊させました。堤防が決壊したために、川の水が街に流れ出ました。そして、市内の劇場街や市庁舎が水浸しになったのです。

つまり、堤防近くの一帯を水浸しにした「flooding」という出来事は、堤防を決壊させた「burst the … banks」という出来事の結果として起きたことがらです。このように、この例文では「S V, Ving」という構造が、「S V」（主節）と「Ving」（動詞ing）との間に因果関係があるということを示しています。言い換えると、「Vingの導く句」は主節が記述している出来事の結果を表しているのですね。

これに対して、先程の書き換えのように「S　V and V」の形でこの文を書くと厳密には、「水浸しにした」ということと「堤防を決壊させた」ということが並列の関係にあり、必ずしも「堤防決壊」の結果として「水浸し」という状況が生じた、とは限りません。

このように、「Vingの導く句」は何らかの意味や機能を持っているということを理解しておくと、「S V, Ving」という構造が含まれる文を読みやすくなるのではないかと思います。

ハリケーン「ハービー」についての文では、「Vingの導く句」が表す意味は「結果」でしたが、「Vingの導く句」は他にも様々な意味や機能を持っている場合があります。そういった意味・機能は複合的に絡み合っている場合も多く、必ずしも明確に区別や分類が出来るわけではありませんが、典型的に「Vingの導く句」が主節とどの様な関係で結びついているのかを分類しておくのは、有益でしょう。

大雑把に言うと、「S V, Ving」という構造では、「Vingの導く句」は「結果」「追加情報」「理由･原因」「譲歩」といったことを表しているように思います。１つずつ、実例を見ていきましょう。

結果

まずは既に少し考察した、主節で述べられている出来事の結果を表す場合を見ていきます。ニュース記事から実例をいくつか見てみましょう。原文の後に大雑把な和訳を添えます。

Russia’s Shiveluch volcano is erupting in Kamchatka, spewing ash to a height of 10 kilometres above sea level. (BBC News, October 28, 2010)

和訳 -- ロシアのカムチャッカ半島にあるシヴェルチ火山が噴火し、海抜10キロの高さまで灰を噴出している。

お分かりのように、「spewing」（噴出している）という「Ving」は、この火山が「is erupting」噴火していることの結果として、生じていることですね。

Transylvania County, south of Asheville, declared a state of emergency after 10 inches (25 centimeters) fell Monday, causing landslides, flooding roads and destroying at least one home. (AP News, August 18, 2021)

和訳 -- アッシュビルの南に位置するトランシルバニア郡では、月曜日に10インチ（25センチ）の降雨があり、土砂崩れが起き、道路が冠水し、少なくとも住宅一棟が倒壊したため、緊急事態を宣言した。

この文では、「Ving」（動詞ing）が３つあり、それらは、「10 inches (25 centimeters) fell Monday」に繋がっています。因果関係をはっきりさせるために該当部分を直訳しますと、「10インチ（25センチ）の降雨があり、この雨が土砂崩れを引き起こし、道路を冠水させ、少なくとも一棟の家屋を破壊した」ということになります。

State media on Sunday reported rivers in Quang Tri province rose to the highest levels in over 20 years, inundating more than 40,000 houses in the province and killing dozens of people. (Reuters, October 18, 2020)

和訳 -- この本が扱っている時代の初めには、インドは西側市場に対して開放政策を取り始め、技術革命につながる強い経済を構築しつつあった。

追加情報・説明

次に見る、「Vingの導く句」の役割は、主節「S V」に記述された出来事の意義や詳細を説明するなど、主節に追加情報を加えるということです。

Dr. James Cutrell, an infectious disease specialist and associate professor of medicine at UT Southwestern in Dallas, said he had seen an increase in demand for the treatments recently, mirroring the increase in Covid-19 cases in Texas. (NBC News, August 21, 2021)

和訳 -- 感染症の専門家であり、ダラスにあるテキサス大学サウスウェスタン医学センターの准教授であるジェームズ・カトレル博士は、最近この治療の需要が増加しているが、これはテキサス州での新型コロナウイルス感染者の増加を反映していると述べた。

原文の記事の当該部分では、単クローン抗体治療（monoclonal antibody）が焦点となっており、「この治療」は単クローン抗体治療を指しています。

この文では、「最近この治療の需要が増えた」ということ（主節の内容）が、テキサス州での感染者の増加を反映しているというように、主節の内容に情報を加えている、あるいは、主節に述べられている出来事の意義を説明していると言えますね。

China’s top official in Tibet has urged authorities to tighten their grip on the Internet and mobile phones, state media reported on Thursday, reflecting the government’s fears about unrest ahead of its annual parliamentary session. (NBC News, March 1, 2012)

和訳 -- 中国のチベット自治区トップが、インターネットや携帯電話への規制を強化するよう当局に促したと、国営メディアが木曜日に伝えた。これは、全国人民代表大会を控えた政府の不安を反映したものだ。

「クリントン氏が『その件については何も知らなかった』と述べた」というのが主節の意味ですが、そう言った時の彼の様子を「動詞ing」以下の部分が描写しています。主節に追加の情報を加えているわけですね。

和訳 -- 昨日、政権当局者は連邦議会に行き、議員らに対して機密情報ブリーフィングを行って軍事攻撃の正当性を説明した。

理由・原因

「Ving（動詞ing）の導く句」の中には、主節「S V」に記述されている事柄の理由や原因を表わしているものもあります。

和訳 -- 今回のサミットは、論争の的となっているバイオ燃料についても、植物原料の燃料利用には「課題と機会」の両面があることを認識し、バランスをとった形となった。

この記事を読み進めると、サトウキビやトウモロコシなどの作物を原料としたバイオ燃料については、環境にやさしい半面、作物を燃料として使うことによって食卓から食料を奪うことのないよう、「綿密な調査」が必要であるとの議論がサミットで行われたということが書かれています。「植物原料の燃料利用には『課題と機会』の両面がある」ということを認識したという理由から、サミットの議論はバランスを取った方向に進んだということですね。

譲歩

「Ving（動詞ing）の導く句」の中には、主節「S V」との関係が譲歩であると感じられるものもあります。しばしば「even」が「動詞ing」の直前にあります。例を見ましょう。

「Ving, S V」（「動詞ing」+「主語+動詞」）

ここからは、「Ving」が主節「S V」の前にあるパターンを見ていきます。

「Ving」の主語は、主節の主語と同じ

「Ving, S V」という構造でも、基本的には「Ving」の（意味上の）主語は、主節の主語と同じです。

「Ving, S V」の意味・ニュアンス

「Ving」（動詞ing）が主節「S V」の前に来ている場合も、主節の後に来ている場合とよく似た意味を表すことが多いのですが、少し異なる面もあります。一番大きな違いは、「Ving」が主節の内容の「結果」を示すことは、まず無いと考えて良いということです。「Ving, S V」では、「Ving」が主節の前にあるので結果を示すのにはふさわしくないのです。

それでは、「Ving, S V」という構造で、「Vingの導く句」が主節とどの様な関係で結びついているのでしょうか。上の「S V, Ving」と同様で、この関係性は必ずしも明確に区別や分類ができるわけではありません。しかし、典型的には、「時・場合」「継起」「原因･理由」「追加情報」「譲歩」といったことを表しています。１つずつ、実例を見ながら考えていきましょう。

時･場合

まずは、主節「S V」に記述されている出来事が起こる（あるいは起こった）時や場合を「Vingの導く句」が表している例を見ましょう。

Turning around, he saw Shana and two youngsters — who also died — lying in pools of blood. (NBC News, April 17, 2008)

和訳 -- 彼が振り向くと、シャナと2人の若者が死んで血まみれになって倒れていた。

この「Turning around」は、「he」（彼）が「振り向いた時」という意味ですね。

Speaking at a media conference in Wellington on Saturday, New Zealand’s prime minister said that of the seven injured, five were in hospital, and three of them were in a critical condition. (The Guardian, September 4, 2021)

継起

「Ving, S V」というパターンの文では、「Vingが導く句」と主節「S V」が、２つの出来事を起こった時間順に記述していることがしばしばあります。下で見ていく「理由・原因」や「譲歩」も「継起」とも言える場合があるのですが、ここに取り上げる例は、「理由・原因」や「譲歩」を表していると断言しにくい文で、「継起」を示しているものです。

理由・原因

「Vingの導く句」が主節「S V」の後ろにあるときに｢理由」や「原因」を表す場合があることを上で見ましたが、主節の前にあるときも、同様の意味を持つことがあります。

最後に、「動詞ingの導く句」が「譲歩｣の意味を表していると感じられる例を見ましょう。上で考察した「S V, Ving」と同様、譲歩を表す場合は「even」という単語がこの句の前に見られることが多いようです。
