意味・使われ方
この「for comment」という表現は、報道機関や記者が、報道内容（例えば疑惑等）に対する返答やコメントを求めるために連絡を取った、あるいは連絡を試みたということを示すときに使われます。
この表現がニュース英語でしばしば使われる典型的なパターンは、主に次のとおりです（報道機関はここでは「this newspaper」とし、報道されている人は「Mr. Doe」としておきます）。

ニュース記事における機能
今回取り上げている表現は、公平で透明な報道を維持するために使われます。責任ある報道には、非難されている側や批判されている側に返答の機会を与えることが求められます。この機会を与えようとしたことを明記することで、報道機関は当人の言い分を記事に含めようと試みたことを示すことができます。
記事に本人の声がない場合、今回の表現を使うことで、記事の中心人物がなぜ自身の見解を述べていないのかを読者に伝えます。それは記者が当人を無視したからではなく、その人が返答していないからだということです。
こうして中立性を担保することは、新聞社が偏見や一方的な報道をしているという非難を避けるのに役立ちます。これにより、記事の信頼性が高まります。場合によっては、相手側の言い分を得ようと努力したことを示すことで、名誉毀損訴訟から出版物を守る助けとなることもあります。

The Duchess of York allegedly sent an email apologising to disgraced late financier Jeffrey Epstein after he threatened to “destroy her” in a “Hannibal Lecter-style” phone call, according to reports. Sarah Ferguson sent the message in April 2011, describing Epstein as a “supreme friend”, after she had publicly disowned him in the media.

JLR has given no indication that its incident also involves such malware, but in a separate and unconfirmed incident in March, the Hellcat ransomware group claimed it had extracted data from JLR’s systems. The owners of the cargo ship that crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge are suing the company that built the vessel, alleging negligence in the design of a critical switchboard on the ship. Grace Ocean Private and Synergy Marine PTE Ltd, the owners of the Dali, filed the lawsuit last week against Hyundai Heavy Industries in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. “As a result of the defectively designed Switchboard, the Vessel suffered a power outage that led to the allision with the Key Bridge,” Grace Ocean Private alleges in the lawsuit.
