今回の表現「meanwhile」は、状況が異なる場所や文脈で同時に2つの出来事が起こっていることを示す接続副詞として使われます。具体的には、しばしば同時に起きている2つの関連する出来事を対比させるため、または進行中の状況中に発生する別の重要な出来事を導入するため、あるいは異なる視点や反応を強調するためなどといった目的で使われます。
